During freezing, water forms ice and dissolved components become concentrated in the remaining unfrozen phase. During primary drying, ice is removed mainly by sublimation under vacuum. Secondary drying then reduces more tightly associated water to a target residual-moisture range.<\/p>\n<p>Each stage can create physical or chemical stress. Freezing can concentrate solutes; drying can alter molecular mobility; and excessive or insufficient residual moisture can affect stability. A visually intact cake cannot confirm identity, purity, peptide content, residual moisture or sterility. Those questions require appropriate analytical methods.<\/p>\n<h2>Does lyophilization prevent degradation?<\/h2>\n<p>No. Lyophilization can reduce some degradation pathways by lowering molecular mobility and water activity, but oxidation, deamidation, aggregation or other changes can still occur.
