A material sold specifically as <strong>Research Use Only (RUO)<\/strong>, however, should not be interpreted as a medicine or as a product intended for personal use.<\/p>\n<h2>What is a peptide?<\/h2>\n<p>Peptides are molecules built from amino-acid residues connected mainly by peptide bonds. IUPAC defines peptides chemically rather than by one universal length cut-off. In practice, the boundary between a peptide, a polypeptide and a protein is contextual, so statements such as \u201cevery peptide contains fewer than 50 amino acids\u201d are useful rules of thumb rather than absolute definitions.<\/p>\n<p>The amino-acid sequence strongly influences a peptide\u2019s charge, hydrophobicity, conformation and interactions. Some peptides bind receptors; others act as substrates, inhibitors, antimicrobials, structural motifs or analytical standards. It is therefore inaccurate to describe all peptides as working through the same biological mechanism.<\/p>\n<h2>Why are peptides used in research?<\/h2>\n<p>Peptides can be useful experimental tools because researchers can select a defined sequence and study its physicochemical or biological behaviour under controlled conditions. Depending on the research question, peptides may be used in receptor studies, enzyme assays, cell-signalling experiments, structural biology, analytical method development or as reference materials.<\/p>\n<p>A laboratory result obtained with a peptide does not by itself establish a therapeutic effect in humans. Evidence from cell systems, isolated tissues or animal models must be distinguished from human clinical evidence.<\/p>\n<h2>How are synthetic peptides made?<\/h2>\n<p>Many synthetic peptides are produced by solid-phase peptide synthesis (SPPS), a method developed from the work of R. Bruce Merrifield. Amino acids are coupled sequentially while the growing chain remains attached to a solid support. Modern peptide manufacturing can also use solution-phase steps, fragment condensation or, for suitable molecules, recombinant approaches.<\/p>\n<p>Synthesis can generate peptide-related impurities such as deletion sequences, truncated sequences, insertion sequences, stereoisomers and other process- or degradation-related species. This is why analytical characterization matters after synthesis.<\/p>\n<h2>What does peptide quality mean?<\/h2>\n<p>No single number completely describes peptide quality. A scientifically useful characterization can include identity, chromatographic purity, assay or peptide content, counterions, water content, aggregation or degradation products, depending on the material and purpose.
